Morse code alphabet
Every letter, with how to say itHow to use it
- Type or paste text. The morse appears as you type.
- Paste morse into the Morse panel, written with dots, dashes and slashes, to turn it back into text.
- Press Play to hear it, and pick a speed in words per minute (WPM).
- Pick 2× or 3× spacing to widen the gaps between letters while the letters themselves stay at that speed. This is Farnsworth timing, which the ARRL adopted for its code practice in 1990; read how it helps you learn morse.
- Press Copy to take the dots and dashes, or Share link to send the whole thing, speed and spacing included.
To put this translator on your own site or class page, copy the code from theembed page.
Sound, light and vibration
Everything the translator sends comes off one timetable, so the outputs stay in step to the millisecond. The morse you generate can go out on any of them at once:
- Sound. A 600 Hz tone, on while each mark lasts. Turn it off to send silently.
- The drawing. Each dit and dah lights as its sound starts, so you can watch a pattern go by at the speed you set. The light beside the marks follows the same timetable.
- Flashlight. On Android phones in Chrome the rear camera flash blinks with the marks, which is how you signal across a dark field. It asks for camera access first, and nothing is recorded or sent. iPhones don’t let a web page switch the flash.
- Vibration. One buzz per mark, as long as the mark, on phones whose browser allows it.
If your system is set to reduce motion, the drawing and the light stay still and the sound, flashlight and vibration still run.
How morse timing works
A dit (the short signal) lasts 1 unit and a dah (the long one) lasts 3. Marks inside a letter are 1 unit apart, letters are 3 units apart, and words are 7. The standard word PARIS fills exactly 50 units, so at 20 WPM each unit lasts 60 milliseconds.

Questions
How do you write in morse code?
Type your text in the Text panel and the morse appears as you type, drawn to the real 1 to 3 timing and written out as dots and dashes you can copy. By hand, write each letter’s dots and dashes from the morse code alphabet, with a space between letters and a slash between words.
How do you read morse code?
Match each group of dots and dashes to its letter: a space ends a letter and a slash ends a word. Paste the morse into the Morse panel to have it read for you, or learn the letters by sound from the morse code alphabet.
How do you translate morse code to English?
Paste the morse into the Morse panel, with a space between letters and a slash between words. The English appears in the Text panel as you paste, and Play lets you hear it.
What does this mean in morse code?
Paste the dots and dashes into the Morse panel and the meaning appears in the Text panel. For a short pattern such as a single dot or seven dots, look it up on the answers page, which says what it means and where it turns up.
How do you make morse code in Google?
Use Gboard, Google’s phone keyboard, which has a morse layout on Android and iPhone. Google Translate doesn’t handle morse. Read the full answer.
How does morse code work?
Each letter is a fixed pattern of short and long signals, dits and dahs, and a dah lasts three times as long as a dit. The gaps carry meaning too: 1 unit between marks, 3 between letters and 7 between words, as the timing ruler shows.
How do you communicate with a flashlight in morse code?
Give a short flash for a dit and one three times as long for a dah, with one count of dark between marks and three between letters. On an Android phone in Chrome, switch on Flashlight here and the camera flash blinks the morse for you; iPhones don’t let a web page switch the flash.
How do you say hello in morse code?
H is di-di-di-dit, E is dit, L is di-dah-di-dit and O is dah-dah-dah, so hello is those five letters with a letter gap between each. Tap Hello above the translator to hear it and see it drawn.
