Hi in morse code
Six dits and nothing else, four for H and two for I. Press Play to hear it and see it blink, or save the pattern below as a picture.
.... ..
The flashlight needs camera access. Nothing is recorded or sent.
How to blink Hi with a flashlight
Count a steady beat. A dit (the short signal) is one count of light, and a dah (the long one) is three. Stay dark for one count between flashes and three counts between letters.
- H: four short flashes.
- I: two short flashes.
- Stay dark for seven counts, then start again from the first letter.

Hi as a morse code bracelet
Each dit is a round bead and each dah a tube three times as long, with a small spacer between letters. For a 7 in bracelet in 3 mm beads: 6 dit beads, 1 spacer and 52 plain beads.
Why hi is all dits
H is four dits and I is two, so the only thing that marks the change of letter is the gap. Inside a letter the marks are one unit apart; between letters the gap is three units. Send all six dits at the same spacing and the listener hears a run of six, which isn’t a letter at all.
At 10 words per minute (WPM), the speed the player starts at, hi takes 13 units, a little over 1.5 seconds. That makes it one of the quickest words to send, and a good one to practice keeping your gaps even.
HI HI: laughter on the air
Morse has no sign for a laugh, so radio operators spell one. The International Amateur Radio Union’s operating guide lists HI as laughter in CW, and operators usually send it twice: HI HI, twelve dits in four letters.
