How love is put together

L is a dit, a dah and two dits. O is three dahs, V is three dits and a dah, and E is a single dit. That adds up to 12 marks, 7 of them dits, with the three dahs of O as the longest stretch of sound in the word.

At 10 words per minute (WPM), the speed the player starts at, love takes 39 units, about 5 seconds.

88: love on the air

Radio operators seldom spell it out. The International Amateur Radio Union’s operating guide lists 88 as love and kisses, next to 73 for best regards. In morse, 88 is two figure eights of three dahs and two dits each: 10 marks, two fewer than love.

For a ring, a bracelet or a tattoo

At 12 marks, half the length of I love you, love suits a small space such as a ring or a wrist. The picture above names each letter under its marks, so it works as a pattern to copy, and every mark keeps the ratio set by ITU-R M.1677-1: a dah three times as long as a dit, with one dit’s space between marks.
