How help me is put together

HELP is four dits for H, one dit for E, a dit, a dah and two dits for L, and a dit, two dahs and a dit for P. ME is two dahs for M and a single dit for E. That adds up to 16 marks.

At 10 words per minute (WPM), the speed the player starts at, help me takes 55 units, about 6.6 seconds.

The gap between the words

The one thing help me adds to help is a word gap: seven units of silence, more than twice the three units between letters. Cut it short and the listener reads HELPME as one word. With a flashlight, count the seven slowly.

Help me or SOS

SOS is sent as a single signal of nine marks, 23 units long, so help me takes more than twice as long. The International Radiotelegraph Conference in Berlin gave SOS priority as the distress signal in 1906. If you need to be understood, send SOS.
